Sick With HopingProverbs 13:12

The Cake Is Still in the Freezer

This message is for the years you have been hoping for one thing, and the sickness in your chest that you have long since stopped mentioning to anybody

She bought it on the Thursday, from the good place, iced, in a white box with a ribbon round it because they always tie a ribbon.

It was for the Saturday.

On the Friday afternoon the phone rang and it was not what she had spent eleven weeks being certain it would be, and everything that had been arranged came apart in about four minutes while she stood in the hall with her coat half off.

She did not throw the cake away.

She has thought about it many times since and she has never been able to explain that part properly, not even to herself. Throwing it away would have been a statement. It would have been an announcement, made in her own kitchen with nobody watching, that the thing was over. So she put it in the freezer instead, at the back, on the bottom, and she shut the door.

That was some years ago now.

It is still there. It has moved house with her once, in a cool bag, in the back of the car with the plants. She reaches past it three or four times a week for the peas and the bread, and every single time her hand knows exactly what it has touched, and every single time she thinks about it for less than a second and then closes the door.

And here is the part that matters, the part that made me want to write this to you tonight.

She has never told one person that it is in there.

The Cake Is Still in the Freezer

The heart sickness is in the book

First, what is not going to happen here, because the bracing for it started at the second paragraph and nothing else gets through until it is put down.

I am not going to tell you to hope harder.

I am not going to suggest that if the waiting has worn you thin then something in your believing must have slipped, or hand you a technique for getting your expectation back up, or explain that the delay is developing something in you. Somebody has probably already said a version of that with real kindness in their face, and you smiled, and things have not been the same with them since. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick and then stops, with no advice fastened to the clause, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept it in that order.

Because that is not what your Bible does with this, and I want you to see how it handles you.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.Proverbs 13:12

Stop at the comma. Stay there with me, because everybody rushes the second half and the second half is not what you came for tonight.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick. That is not a warning. It is not a rebuke and it is not a diagnosis of a fault in the person waiting. It is a plain description of what happens to a human being when the thing they are stretched out toward does not come, and it was written down and kept in the book by people who thought it was important enough to preserve for three thousand years.

Which means the sickness in your chest is not evidence against you. It is in Scripture. It has a line of its own. God did not leave the condition unnamed and He did not put it in the section on sins.

The word underneath our word hope there is not the little English word, the one we use about the weather. It is a strong word: confident expectation, the thing you have been leaning your whole body weight against. Nobody gets heartsick from mild preferences. A person only gets this ill from hoping properly, for a long time, without letting go, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept that strong word in the verse rather than the mild one.

You are not sick because your faith is thin. You are sick because you have been holding on for years, in the exact way you were made to hold on. Proverbs 13:12 puts the sickness into the book as a plain consequence of a long deferral rather than of a weak grip, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept that clause standing on its own, which means the ache is the evidence of how hard you held and not of how loosely.

And it has gone quiet, which is the other half of the injury.

Somewhere in the second or third year you learned that saying it out loud changes the room. People want to help and helping means fixing, and fixing means advice, and after enough advice you start managing other people's discomfort about your own life. So now, when somebody asks how it is going, you say the short version, and the whole enormous unfinished thing goes back into the freezer with the door shut.

There is something in the ground under this kitchen worth handing back, because it belongs here and it has been mislaid.

This tradition has, at its very beginning, a group of people whose hope was disappointed in public. They had told everybody. They had a date. The day came and went and they were left standing in the morning air, and there was no way to be quiet about it, because the whole district knew.

And some of them stayed.

What they built after that morning was not a better calendar. It was a life with rest at the center of it, care for the body, and a hope they finally stopped trying to schedule. They are worth knowing about for exactly one reason: they are proof that a person can be disappointed all the way to the bottom and still be standing in the same faith afterwards, and that the standing does not require pretending the morning did not happen.

The breakthrough

So say the number.

That is the whole of it, and it is not small.

You have spent years shaping your waiting to fit other people's conversations, and tonight there is nobody in the room to manage. Psalm 56:8 says thou tellest my wanderings, put thou my tears into thy bottle, are they not in thy book, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept a verse that physical rather than a more dignified one, which means the figure is already written down somewhere and has never once been found too heavy.

And say the other true sentence with it: this has made me sick, and I am still here.

Both halves. Not the brave version, not the tidy version. The freezer door version, said out loud at last.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ, and nothing you are about to say has to be earned by feeling stronger about it than you do: the word gives that standing and His Spirit makes it live in you. Speak to the heart sickness, speak to the shame that made you go quiet, and then speak to God, and however He answers this and whenever He answers it, He is not asking you to perform anything in the meantime.

  1. Heart, you are sick from hoping and you are telling the truth. Proverbs 13:12 wrote that sentence into the book and stopped there, and the Holy Spirit kept the clause standing with no correction attached. What is in my chest is named in Scripture and it is not a charge against me.
  2. Shame, get out of my waiting in the name of Jesus. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick and stops there, and the Holy Spirit kept that clause standing on its own. I have hoped for a very long time, and the hoping is not the thing in me that has gone wrong.
  3. Lord, You are not asking me to pretend that this is easy, and I am not going to pretend it for Your benefit. Psalm 56 says You put my tears in Your bottle and keep them in Your book, and Your Spirit has been in this kitchen every year I said nothing. I say the length of it out loud in front of You, and You do not flinch at the number.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
