He noticed it in the car, which is where a man notices things.
His daughter had asked him something about the end of everything, the way she does, in the middle of a conversation about a completely different subject, and he had answered her.
And he listened to himself answer her.
He said, well, He is coming back one way or another, and then he changed lanes and talked about the shopping.
That was the whole answer. One way or another. Then the shopping.
He used to lean in for this. That is the thing. He used to put his glass down and lean in over the low table with both hands going, and the room would go quiet, and his daughter would ask him what it will actually be like, and he had answers and he gave them gladly and the answers were good.
He is not sure exactly when the leaning in stopped.
He knows why, though. He knows why to the month.
There was a year he said out loud, in this room, with people sitting on every side of the table, and he did not say it as a guess. He said it as a man says a thing he has been given. And people made decisions on the back of it. Small ones, but decisions.
The year went by.
Nobody was cruel about it. That is not this family. His brother in law made one joke, once, six months later, and stopped when nobody laughed, and that was the entire consequence, publicly.
Privately, the sentence started getting shorter.
Now it is one way or another, and a lane change.
And here is the part he has not said to anybody, including his wife. His son has stopped asking. Not out of unbelief, he does not think. Out of politeness. Because a boy learns quickly what his father does not want to be asked about, and a boy will protect his father from that without ever once mentioning it.
If there is a sentence you have been trimming down in your own house, come and sit. The glasses are already out.

The verse that calls the waiting patience
There is a line written to people who were being asked, out loud, where the promise had got to. It does not defend God and it does not scold them.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9
Notice what it does not say. It does not say the promise was misunderstood. It does not say the people asking were faithless for asking.
It takes the delay itself and renames it. What looks from underneath like slackness is, from above, patience. And the patience has a reason, and the reason is a person who is not in yet.
You are living inside a delay that Scripture has already named, and it named it patience rather than failure. 2 Peter 3:9 puts the longsuffering of God where a man would have put an excuse, and the Holy Spirit kept that renaming in the book for readers who were being asked awkward questions at their own tables, which means the years since have been full of a mercy rather than empty of an answer.
The date was never in the sentence
Here is where the trimming went wrong, and it is worth being precise, because precision is what gives a man his mouth back.
There were two things in what you said at that table. There was He is coming. And there was the year.
Only one of those was ever yours.
The first one is the oldest confession the church has. The second one was never issued to anybody, and the disciples asked for it directly and did not get it either.
You have a promise that stands entirely intact and a year that was never handed to you to carry. Scripture keeps the times and the seasons in the Father's own power in Acts 1:7, and the Spirit who carries that verse has never yet given a man a date to announce over a low table, so when the year fell away the promise did not come away with it.
And what you did, when the year fell, was cut the whole sentence down rather than cut the year out of it. That is understandable. It is also more than was ever required.
What your son is protecting
Now the boy who stopped asking, because that is the real weight and it has been sitting under everything else.
You are a father whose children learned to expect something from him, and that teaching is not undone by a wrong year. Deuteronomy 6:7 says to talk of these things sitting in the house and walking by the way, which is the car, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings a word to a young mind long after the conversation, which means every leaning in you ever did over that table is still working in them.
He is not protecting you from a lie. He is protecting you from a sore place. Children do that, and they do it beautifully, and they should not have to do it forever.
Something is available in this room, and it is not a new date and it is not an explanation of the old one.
You have the whole sentence back, and the half you cut off was never the half that failed. 2 Peter 3:9 says the Lord is not slack concerning His promise, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept that promise warm in a house where a man went quiet about it, so the leaning in and the hands and the room going still are all still on the table where you left them.
Nobody is asking you to announce anything. Nobody is asking you to explain the year, or to apologize for it at a meal, or to give your children a timetable. You are being given permission to want it out loud again. That is all, and it is a great deal.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.
- Sentence I cut in half at my own table, you are getting your whole length back tonight. 2 Peter 3 says the Lord is not slack concerning His promise but is longsuffering toward us, and the Holy Spirit put the patience where a man would have put an excuse. He is coming, and I do not know when, and both halves of that go back in my mouth.
- Politeness my son learned in order to spare me, in the name of Jesus you are lifted off that boy and you are not his to carry. The word says to talk of these things sitting in the house and walking by the way, and His Spirit brings a word back to a young mind years after the car ride. My children get a father who leans in again.
- Lord, You have been longsuffering over this house the whole time I was shortening my own sentence in it. Your word calls the waiting patience and names the reason for it, and Your Spirit has kept the promise warm in a room where I went quiet. I am buying the good coffee this week and putting it on the shelf.
