The Woman Who Only Stops When She Drops

Twice a year, near enough, she goes down for three days.

Not ill exactly. Her sister calls it a crash and she does not care for the word, but there is no better one available. She is upright and doing eleven things, and then she is not, and then there are three days of the curtains being shut and everybody being very careful around her.

And then she gets up and does it all again.

If you asked her when she last rested, she would tell you about the three days, and she would tell you about it as though it counted.

Here is what somebody said to her at a table like this one, quite gently, and it has been with her ever since.

That is not rest. That is a shutdown.

She got a bit sharp about it in the moment. Then she went home and thought about it for a fortnight and could not find anything wrong with the sentence.

Because she has never once stopped on purpose. Not in the whole of her adult life. She has stopped because a body ran out, and she has stopped because a doctor said so, and she has stopped because a week collapsed.

She has never sat down on a day she could have kept going.

And she has come to think of that as ordinary, which is the actual problem, because a person who thinks a crash is a rest has no category left for what a gift looks like.

If your only stops are the ones you did not choose, sit down at this table a minute. Nobody is going to add anything to your week.

Made for you, and Jesus says it in that order

There is a sentence of Jesus about rest that settles the whole question of who it belongs to.

The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.Mark 2:27

Read the direction of it. Made for. Not required of, not demanded from, not extracted. It is described in the language you would use about a gift somebody had gone to trouble over.

And then He puts the second half in to close off the misreading, because He knew exactly which way it would get turned round: not man for the sabbath. The day is not a thing you serve. It is a thing that was made and handed to you.

Which means the day is not one more item on your list, and it is not a performance you might do badly, and it is not something you have to be well enough to deserve.

You have been given a day rather than assigned one, and Jesus put the direction of it beyond argument. Mark 2:27 makes rest a thing made for a person rather than a duty owed by one, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a command land in somebody as a gift rather than as another demand, which means what is on offer here is not more work with a nicer name.

A crash is not a rest, and calling it one has cost you

Now let me say the thing your friend said, but slower.

There is a difference between stopping and being stopped, and it is not a small one.

Being stopped is what happens when the body finally overrules you. There is no choice in it, no permission, and nothing restful about it either: three days behind the curtains is not a person receiving anything, it is a person paying.

Stopping is a decision made while you could still have carried on. That is the whole of the difference and it is the whole of what makes it a gift, because a gift you were forced to take is not a gift, it is a bill.

You are allowed to stop while you could still keep going, and that permission is not something you have to earn first. Hebrews 4:9 says there remains a rest for the people of God, and the word is a keeping of rest rather than a reward for exhaustion, and it is His Spirit who makes that available to a woman who has not caught up and is not going to, which means today qualifies exactly as it stands.

And I am not going to hand you a scheme. There is nothing here to keep up and nothing to fall behind on and no pattern you have to establish. This site does not do that, and I am not going to give a woman who crashes twice a year one more thing she can fail at.

I am also not going to tell you which day, and this site never will. That question has cost this tradition more than it was ever worth and no reader is going to fail this article by having a different answer to it.

You are not the one holding this together, and the world does not come apart while you sit down. Colossians 1:17 says that by Him all things consist, and it is His Spirit at work in the ordinary machinery of a life, which means the sentence under everything you do is a fear about your situation rather than a description of it.
